Local Talent: Jessie Dixon

Oil Painting of a toddler sat in an armchair with a black cat.

How long have you been an artist? I started drawing a bit during the Pandemic. I discovered artists whose works completely compelled me. I quickly became absorbed by art. I’m constantly striving to better my artistic ability and to learn more about art history. I’ve been painting for about three years now.

Where did you train or gain experience? I’m self taught. However, I do have a background in design which definitely helps when making decisions about composition and colour in a painting. I graduated with first class degree in BA (hons) Graphic and Media Design from HCA. Despite only practising art for a short time I have been met with some wonderful opportunities. Last year I was selected by Tracy Emin as a finalist for the Margate Art Prize. The previous year I received a high commendation for a painting in the Qube gallery in Oswestry.

What sort of art do you create? I’m very interested in painting people, mainly in oils. I’m fascinated by the human condition. The subjects of nostalgia and childhood are a particular source of inspiration for me... I seem to paint a lot of cats too!

Where can we see your work? I am currently getting ready for my upcoming solo show at The Chair in Hay-on-Wye. The show will be running from the 1st - 14th April. Please follow my Instagram page where I will announce more specific times and updates about the show.
