Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees

Who are you, and what do you do? We are a registered charity that started in 2015 and is entirely run and supported by volunteers. We now have over 500 local people involved who are concerned about people seeking sanctuary. We work in our communities to bring people together, to promote understanding of different cultures, and to help people seeking sanctuary who often have suffered so much. We offer days out, practical help and friendship. More information can be found at, https://hbtsr.cityofsanctuary.org/

What are the organisation’s goals? We are a group of volunteers who aim to welcome people seeking sanctuary. Our main goals are to show and promote support and welcome for people forced to seek sanctuary by:1.Offering days out in our beautiful area to people seeking sanctuary. 2. Raising money to help individuals and other groups who assist and support people seeking sanctuary. 3. By asking our political representatives to put in place more humane policies for a fair and kind immigration system.

How has the money raised been used in recent years? Please see our website for full details. In 2023, among other activities, the group welcomed 600 people to eight Welcome Days involving many local communities. We supported people in urgent need of food and clothing, particularly footwear. From our hardship funds, we donated bicycles to groups supporting people seeking sanctuary and worked with schools to raise awareness of the needs of people seeking sanctuary by arranging speakers and donating helpful books. We have strong links with the local Ukrainian families and have tried to help them to feel included and integrated into our community.
