Pearce Cycles

When was the business started? We originally started as Pearce Engineering, doing agricultural machinery and motor vehicle repairs. In the early 1990s we started selling a few British Eagle bikes as well, so Pearce Cycles was created.

Where are you based? You can find our premises 0.75 miles out of Ludlow, on Fishmore Road, just past Fishmore Hall Hotel.

What kinds of bikes do you sell? We sell mountain, road, hybrid and children’s bikes. We also have a range of electric bikes which are very popular – both on and off road. We have a small fleet of test bikes which customers can try before they buy.

Our bike brands are Specialized, Nukeproof, Merida and Orange. We also have a wide range of spares and accessories from leading brands. Because of our engineering background and equipment, we can make the odd ‘widget’ or adapt par ts if required.

I noticed you have a workshop: what services do you provide? We aim to be able to tackle any repair on any bike – from a puncture on a ‘boneshaker’ to a full service on a top-of-the-range bike. Custom build is another service we can offer. Our experienced workshop technicians are Cytech qualified and all our staff are enthusiastic bike riders.

How important is bike fitting and what can be expected from a bike fitting service? A good bike fit is very important to get the most comfortable and efficient ride. We’ll help you select an appropriate bike to match your requirements and assist with choosing frame size to ensure you ride away set up correctly. We can do a detailed bike-fit which will optimise riding position to further improve performance and can reduce likelihood of injury.

What kind of events do you put on and how can people get involved? With 30 years of experience, Pearce Cycles is well known nationally for the mountain bike events we put on – such as National Championships, National and Regional Series. These attract competitors from all over the country and we cater from ages 13 to over 60!

When running these events, we are fortunate in that we put together our own medic, timing and uplift transport teams with the personnel and equipment we have. We have a small team of key helpers but always need more – if anybody wishes to get involved, just contact the shop, please!

What is your greatest achievement in your business? We have been officially recognised by British Cycling – the sport’s governing body – for our contribution to cycling. But it is nice to see the different types of customers we attract – John O’Groats to Lands End riders call in, cyclists holidaying in the area look us up and we have a loyal customer base who know they can call in any time.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? We had a Penny Farthing bike in recently for a puncture and wheel true, which was a challenge!

Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know? We are a family-run business, aiming to offer good, friendly service and value.
