Q&A with Cool Moves Dance

We spoke to Matt and Sarah at Cool Moves Dance to learn more about their beginner dance classes this January.

Please tell us about Cool Moves Dance and how it all started? We met through dancing over 20 years ago and since then have we have been lucky enough to teach and perform all around the world. In 2007 we decided we wanted to set up our own classes and share the fun and pleasure we get from dancing. It started off with just us two and now we have seven teachers, teaching classes all over Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire.

What styles of dance do you teach and can you give us an idea of what a class is like? We mainly teach Jive 50s Swing Style (although we do have Lindy Hop, Balboa and other classes available). Classes last 45 minutes with 15 minutes practice time afterwards. There is no need to bring a partner; however, if you have one that is great. Classes are fun and friendly and you can take them at your own pace.

Are your classes suitable for someone who may have never had classes before but would like to give it a try? The Jive is a great dance style to learn because even after only one lesson, you will already have picked up some moves you can continue to practise at home. There is absolutely no pressure, you can come along any time in the first five weeks and pay as you go.The steps are easy to learn and are taught step by step. It’s all about having fun.

Word on the street is that you, Matt & Sarah, are former UK Strictly Swing Champions – can you tell us about this? When we were younger and before we had children, we used to perform at many events, which led us to entering the UK Strictly Swing Championship which was held at the Annual Swing Jam Event in Windsor. We qualified for the final with two other couples and after a final round dance off, we were excited and pleased to be crowned champions.

As well as dance classes, do you offer any other services? Fun Jive or Charleston classes to add something energetic and different to your weekend events. We can bring dancers to add atmosphere, as well as running some fun, interactive classes. We also offer private classes, hen weekends, wedding reception parties or first dance choreography, themed events, team building and corporate events, care home dance demos, interactive sessions and bespoke packages. We have many years’ experience running events and can tailor our packages to suit most events, so please contact us if you are looking for something different and we can discuss your requirements.

Anything else you would like our readers to know? Dancing is all about having fun. Our motto is ‘It’s not a mistake, it’s a variation’. All our classes and dances have a fun and friendly atmosphere, so don’t be afraid to ‘give it a go’. The classes at the Ludlow Assembly Rooms commence on Tuesday 10th January, 7.30pm. If you can’t make that, you can see a full list of venues on our website www.coolmovesdance.co.uk.
