Scan, Recycle, Reward: A New Initiative in Brecon

The Scan|Recycle|Reward trial is taking place in Brecon now, with hundreds of residents within the town already signed up and earning cash for recycling their drink containers.

Since the launch of the trial in July, Brecon town residents and visitors have been able to earn a 10p cash reward for each valid drink container they recycle through the scheme. The containers, which can be bought at most Brecon retailers, can be returned and recycled using the kerbside recycling boxes at home (if you live in Brecon), or via one of the on-the-go return points around the town.

For those yet to take part in the trial, there is still plenty of time to join in and earn some cash or donate it to our nominated local charities - Brecon Food Bank and the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales.

All soft drinks in cartons, cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles (except those sold in multipacks) are included in the trial - just look out for the green 10p stickers when you are shopping in Brecon.

The trial is being run by the Digital Deposit Return Scheme (DDRS) Alliance in partnership with Welsh Government, WRAP Cymru, Powys County Council and local retailers, and is the first time anywhere in the world that a whole town will use this new digital technology to track recycling. The aim is to understand how people engage with this type of digital system and determine how this could be used to help increase the amount we recycle in the future.
