New in Town: Hillscott Projects Ltd.

We had a chat with Hillscott Projects Ltd. this March to learn all about their new business…

Where are you based and what area do you cover? We have a Showroom and Head Office in Brecon, and we cover as far as people would like us to go. We carry out flooring projects in the immediate locality, but also travel further afield. We are happy to go anywhere!

Why this area? Hugo has always been local to the area and was a Christ College pupil in his younger days! Jonathan chose to become local over ten years ago because he loved the area so much. We are currently all living, working and bringing up families here.

What made you start up this business? The business has been running for a number of years, but we felt it was the right time to expand and have a shop front in which we could display the products we supply and install. We are very glad we did - we’ve had friendly, lovely people through the door and thoroughly enjoyed our first few months in town.

What are some challenges you encountered? It’ll be no surprise that Covid has been a challenge, as it has to everyone! We are seeing many positives coming out of it though, such as a newly ignited desire to shop local and have a personal connection with companies.

What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? We have taken the time to form a small, but skilled team who each bring something valuable to the company. Hugo has had decades of experience in the world of floor installation and has incredible product knowledge; Jonathan has a management and retail background and also installs our floors. Caroline is experienced and skilled in management and retail, and Jo has a flair for admin, book-keeping and organisation! Between everyone, we’re able to offer an efficient and friendly service. We’re always looking for like- minded people to come and join us!

Describe a typical day in your business: No two days are the same, which is something we love. We see each project through from beginning to end so, if a domestic or contract customer were to show an interest in having new flooring, they’d come and see Caroline (or contact her by phone or email) and talk through some options and look at some samples. Hugo would then carry out a free, no-obligation home or site visit and an estimate would be prepared. Hugo and Jonathan would install and Jo would provide admin back-up. On any day, the team will be working on one of these stages.

What products do you offer? We currently deal with a few hand-picked suppliers. We wanted to deal with a small number of high quality products that we really believe in. We have beautiful ranges of carpet, LVT and real wood floors. We are the only local suppliers for Kahrs, who are a company we’re really fond of. It’s incredibly important to us that we are operating at a level that is as environmentally friendly as possible, and Kahrs produce their product in a totally carbon neutral way. We also have a fantastic relationship with an amazing wood floor company - we are able to offer literally any colour or finish a customer can imagine.
